Institute of Robotics and Design

The Institute focuses on the research of (1) social and industrial systems involving robots and (2) the design of related robot systems, in order to lead the expanding field of robotics.

Recent fields of research and business focus on the three following areas.

Robot+Education
- School of Robotics founded(2010) : the first professional academic division to be established as a 'School'
- Robot certification exam(2008~): jointly operated by ICROS and Electronic Times
- Robot Outreach Program (2010~): community service supported by the city of Seoul
- Educational contents for effective and efficient robotics study

Robot+Arts
- Research Center for Art and Robotics(2009~): managed in cooperation with Korea National University of Arts
- Research of robot application possibilities in the field of Art
- Consilience study between Art and Technology

Robot+Planning
- Research of changing social systems due to robots (i.e. robot application to the military)
- Research of robot business models
- Research on new areas of robot applications

If the 20th century was an industrial society, the 21st century is an information oriented society. According to such changes in the social system, we now demand an education that promotes independent creativity, unlike the fact cramming ways of previous education. Recent education methods involving robots, breaks away from the previous systems of fact cramming and technique based learning, and encourages students to think, plan and compensate for themselves. In other words, the aim is to develop 21st century professionals who can design a social system in harmony with robots.
To achieve such targets, a new concept of Robotics, that is no longer centered on techniques but is developed combined in cooperation with many other fields of science and technology, needs to be established eventually. The following detailed areas will be studied.

Robotics Outreach Program
University community service for neglected social parties, will be executed through robot education. For instance, robot camps will be run during vacation periods for elementary, middle school and high school students. The main operating agents will be professors and ROBIT members, and local government budget and corporate donations will be utilized.

ROBIT enhancement and operation support
enhance the ROBIT system and support various operations so that it can play the main role in making Kwangwoon University the best university in robotics.

Robot Technology Certification Test
This test aims to develop the key professionals who will lead the future robot industry and establish proper relations between man and robot, by educating correct robot techniques and systemizing the various related technologies.
Classification of the 7 robot techniques : basic knowledge, mechatronics elements technique, kinematics, application, cognition, development, refinement.

Obtain related research assignments(i.e. the development of education methods using robots in order to enhance problem solving skills and creativity) from The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, The Ministry of Knowledge Economy.

The main area of study is to develop and lead a new field of study, through the research of consilience between art and robotics.

Establishment of Institute of Art and Robotics
Joint research is essential for the efficient combination of robotics and another academic field. A joint research center is established with Korea National University of Arts in order to expand robotics and study the consilience between art and robotics. This Institute will be jointly established and operated by Kwangwoon University and Korea National University of Arts. Various organizations, especially corporations, will be encouraged to participate, through easy access to the Institution's open type operation system.

Combination of Art and Robotics
Korea National University of Arts will develop various art contents using robots, and Kwangwoon University will provide the technology to actually make those contents come to life. Kwangwoon University will pay special attention to stage techniques and all types of performance related robot technology.

Development of Education Programs for the consilience of Art and Robotics
Education programs will be jointly developed with Korea National University of Arts. Various competitions will be developed to promote Robot+Arts, and evaluation standards will be established for them. In addition, many technological support will be provided for realization of such events.

Related research assignments will be obtained from the Ministry of Culture and Tourism etc, in cooperation with Korea National University of Arts.

This area leads the planning of new robots, applications, business and industry with a focus on the various fields of robotic studies such as Robot+Education, Robot+Arts etc. Following are the detailed tasks.

The Institute of Future Studies on Robots
This Institute aims to study the predictions related to changes in human society due to robots, based on various robot studies, and eventually play the main role in the education and research of leading the way in creating Robotics. The main activities of this Institute can be summarized as the following. 1) Robot Plus: research of our future society transformed by robots, 2) Robot Rush: research of robot demand according to the changing future society, 3) development of new robots - Shadow robot, tight roping robot, input device etc, 4) robot evening events for inner and outer school promotions, 5) publishment of Kwangwoon Robot Futurology Report, 6) research for robot technology certifications.

Robotics Graduate School
This program shall be operated with a focus on the actual applications(targets) rather than the techniques(tools) related to robotics, and provide a differentiated direction of study. Examples include Robot+Education(education for educators, pursuing education business), Robot+Arts(applying robots to the field of art), Robot+Business(robot related business).

Leading the way in various business and industry planning
This task is to develop and plan new business models in cooperation with robot related corporations and institutes. There will be special emphasis on the planning, obtaining and executing of various related research assignments(making businesses).
