Next-Generation Ubiquitous Networking Research Center

As technological convergence in media and communications leads to IPTV service and WiBro-based high speed mobile wireless communication services, the society now sees on the rise a rich array of services based on technological convergence between high-speed communication technologies and wired/wireless networking technologies. There are ongoing technological advances in NGI (Next Generation Internet), NGN (Next Generation Network), 3.5G and 4G wireless communication, and USN (Ubiquitous Sensor Network). Such technological development further evolves in the pursuit of convergence, interactivity, personalization, intelligence and seamlessness. Against this backdrop, it is critical to secure next-generation networking technologies with regard to enhancing national competitiveness.

The center was established to implement a next-generation ubiquitous communication service which enables people to gain an easy access to information they want anytime, anywhere and with any device. To this end, the center has done a comprehensive and integrated research on various technological elements required to provide ubiquitous communication services.

The center has conducted an integrated and systematic research to make itself the best domestic contributor in the field of next-generation networking technology by making the most and wise use of the university’s expert groups in networking, transmission and application service technologies.

Major research areas are largely in application, networking and transmission as below:

Networking Areas

1) Mobility technology
- MIH-based seamless handover
- High speech mobility management
- LTE and Future Internet mobility management

2) MAC Research
- MAC protocol for new communication methods including MIMO and cooperative communication.
- MAC protocol for new network including VANET and BAN.
- Research on how to implement an efficient wireless MAC protocol

3) Network QoS technology
- Support methods for QoS/QoE of the next generation IPTV
- Real-time communication protocol technology
- Development energy-aware QoS technology used for mobile equipment

4) Femtocell Network Technology
- IMS-based femtocell network technology
- Synchronization algorithm for femtocell network
- Self-Organizing Network (SON) technology

5) Performance analysis of Communication System
- Scheduling and admission/ congestion control of wireless network
- Low-power mechanism modeling based on sleep mode analysis
- Throughput and delay analysis of WiBro, WBAN and other high-tech wireless technologies
