The origin of Kwangwoon University traces back to its origin in 1934, established as "Chosun Wireless School", the very first educational institution regarding radio waves.
The Department of Electronics Convergence Engineering was born in 1991, derived from the existing Radio Wave Engineering Department which has produced many professionals in the specialized fields of RF(Radio Frequency) and electric waves, antenna and mobile and satellite communications.
The previous Radio Wave Engineering Department was equipped with the best research facilities and infrastructure through the RFIC Center, which has been designated as the Ministry of Information and Communication's ITRC(IT Research Center), and based on such foundations, the department made continuous efforts to lead the research of radio waves, both domestic and overseas, by participating in international RF product exhibitions etc. In addition, the department was also designated as the key research area for Brain Korea 21(BK21) and the Ministry's specialized university for 'the reinforcement of radio wave based industry'. Consequently, the department was awarded 500million won from 2002 to 2004, and used this financial support to expand experimental facilities and provide fellowships. The Ministry of Information and Communications also designated the department with the NEXT project, which was made to strengthen the competitiveness of the IT industry, and provided the foundation to develop research equipment, material and internships for 4 years.
Upon this foundation, the department aims to diversify itself by moving beyond mobile and satellite communications, and further pursuing synergy effects with electric information technologies of other fields such as national defense, broadcasting, multi media, automobile, and construction. Also, it makes efforts to expand the choice of course offerings, and provides a wider range of career opportunities. All these changes for development caused the department to change its name to the current Department of Electronics Convergence Engineering in 2009.
The Department of Electronics Convergence Engineering aims to become the leading researcher in the field of electronics convergence, by attracting excellent professors, expanding research facilities and building the required infrastructure.

Korea plans to regain wartime operational control in the coming year of 2012, meaning no more unilateral protection from the US. Consequently, demand for technology on independent national defense is increasing, and in response, the department aims to cultivate professional engineers, skilled in national defense technology.
The main fields of study include radar equipment based on IT technology, phased array antenna, antenna signal processing and electronic war.

The 21st century convergence of the two major flows, broadcasting and communications, will no longer be limited to the past unilateral 1:N type of simple communication, but expand into a wider, bilateral, digitalized form of communication. Accordingly, this major aims to develop competent engineers in the field of broadcasting and communications for the development of the next generation's digital broadcasting era.
The main areas of study include bidirectional systems and input-output devices that deliver multi media contents such as studio-made images, audio and texts through transmitters, multi media communication systems which provide data service to online users who are linked through networks that provide seamless integration and mobility, and overall basics regarding multi media data reservation, management and application services within individual digital devices.

Green IT technology is a field of electronic convergence which promotes low carbon and green growth of future green technology. This field can be categorized into two parts; one is energy saving IT technology which combines energy, nano, bio and photoelectrons to the previous electronic engineering technology in order to maximize energy efficiency; the other is IT application technology which enhances the energy efficiency of all social sectors such as construction, environment etc. This department aims to educate students about the basic knowledge and application skills in relation to such technologies.
The main areas of study include low power high energy effective system semiconductor design, communication protocol and networking skills for energy efficiency enhancement, green display technology, energy harvesting skills etc.
